The initial idea for this retreat first came about with a family that dreamt of a place that they could ease into their retirement days. Tucked away in this secluded area of Beersheba Springs, Tennessee, a site came available with a breathtaking view. The owners had a vision that the home would maximize the experience of a cliff edge and all its captivating scenery. The direction of the design was to compliment the lightness of the views from the cliff edge while simultaneously grounding and connecting the home with nature of the site. The design challenge was furthered with a large single-story footprint of near 6,700 SF (includes porches) and prioritizing natural light. It was important for the form to utilize low-profile roofs to not allow the home to feel visually heavy on the site. With the surrounding lush woods and moss-covered stones, the site inspired the warm wood cladding and natural stone of the exterior material pallet. Before entering the home, a moment of full transparency is already present as you can see from the front porch to the cliff at the opposite side of the valley. The movement throughout the home guides you to engage with the calming site as you trickle through the spaces throughout the house. An open concept family room with an informal dining room and large kitchen provide a maximized connection with line of view to the terrain beyond. The cantilevered deck, lower stone porch, and tree-wrapped screened porch take the views to another level with being completely absorbed into the surrounding nature. As you move throughout the home, moss-inspired finishes are expressive with the greens, teals and blues carrying through stone, tile, and furniture. Moments of serenity and connection can be felt in every space as if time stands still.
